Paul Merson makes claim about reported Arsenal signing
Paul Merson is not convinced that Mohamed Elneny will feature much for Arsenal this season if the Gunners sign the midfielder
Paul Merson believes that Mohamed Elneny will not be a regular starter at Arsenal should he complete his transfer from FC Basel this month.
The Gunners are reported to be closing in on a January deal to sign the midfielder from the Swiss club as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his squad following injuries to the likes of Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla.
Arsenal boss Wenger has insisted that he is indeed in the market to strengthen his squad this month as he looks to add to his squad ahead of a crucial few months for his Arsenal side.
However, Merson has expressed his surprise at seeing Arsenal move to Elneny rather than splash the cash on a more proven top talent.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Thursday, Merson said: “I thought they would go for a real key signing.
“Someone for £30m-odd. I don’t think he’ll go straight in the team, instead he’ll be a squad player for the games coming up.
“It depends how quickly he settles, though.”
Arsenal kick off the defence of their FA Cup title with a home clash against Sunderland this weekend.
