Paul Merson makes prediction about Chelsea’s season

Paul Merson believes that the FA Cup is Chelsea's only chance of winning a trophy this season

Paul Merson has told Chelsea to forget about finishing in the top four this season and says that the Blues’ only chance of silverware is winning the FA Cup.

The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night as they dropped more points in the race for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea’s disastrous start to the new campaign has left them languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table and 12 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Guus Hiddink has been tasked with turning Chelsea’s season around as the Blues prepare for their Champions League last-16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain next month.

However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that Chelsea do not have any hope of finishing in the top four this season and also expects them to be eliminated from the Champions League by the French side.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Thursday morning, Merson said: “They are middle of the table. They should try and win the FA Cup and hopefully go and try to beat Paris Saint-Germain.

“The advantage with Chelsea and the Champions League was they could rest players in the league games now because they can’t win the league and they’re not going to get into the top four.

“The problem is, they’re playing against a team in the Champions League who can rest all they’re players because they’ve won the French league already.

“For me, it’s the FA Cup and that’s it. That was a terrible result [against West Brom] last night.”
