Paul Merson makes prediction about Man United ahead of Liverpool test
Paul Merson feels Manchester United are set to adopt a more attacking style of play in the coming weeks
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United are set to change their tactics to a more attacking approach ahead of their trip to Liverpool on Sunday.
The Red Devils head into the game on the back of a thrilling 3-3 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
United twice squandered the lead as they were pegged back by Steve McLaren’s men and were forced to settle for a point from the game.
Louis van Gaal’s side have come in for plenty of criticism in recent weeks for their lack of attacking intent and unadventurous style of play.
But former Arsenal man Merson feels that Van Gaal is likely to adopt a different approach in the coming weeks.
Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “Louis van Gaal looks like he wants to go out in a blaze of glory at Manchester United.
“From being dull and boring and not being able to buy a goal, he has suddenly started to open games up the way United are now playing.
“I think the 3-3 at Newcastle is a sign of things to come. He’s decided that if he’s going to go down he’ll go down fighting.
“United have opened up and are scoring goals again, which can only be good for players like Wayne Rooney.
“Not so much for Chris Smalling though, because now they’re conceding goals too.
“That could make United’s trip to Anfield interesting this weekend because Liverpool are a team who have goals in them but can’t defend for toffee at the moment.”
United head into Sunday’s game sixth in the Premier League table and five points behind Tottenham, who beat Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
