Paul Merson pinpoints what Liverpool need in January transfer window
Paul Merson urges Liverpool to sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window
Paul Merson believes that Liverpool should try and sign a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window.
The Reds have struggled to produce consistent form since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
Liverpool have recorded impressive away wins against the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea, but have slumped to surprise defeats against Watford and West Ham United in recent weeks.
There have been suggestions that the Reds could be in the market to sign a new goalkeeper to add competition for Simon Mignolet between the posts.
And former Arsenal man Merson has urged the Merseyside outfit to consider signing a shot-stopper during the mid-season transfer window as they look to embark on a more consistent run in the second half of the campaign.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Liverpool need a goalie, like Jack Butland. As you have seen with Arsenal this year, they have a goalie that is saving them points and not losing them points.
“If a goalie that you have had over the last six or seven years is losing you six points a season and a goalie comes in and saves you at least six, that is a 12-point turnaround, which is a lot of points. So Jack Butland I am sure will be on a lot of teams’ lists.”
Liverpool, who finished sixth under Rodgers last season, kicked off 2016 with a disappointing 2-0 loss at West Ham United in the Premier League.
