Paul Merson states his prediction for Everton v Tottenham

Paul Merson is tipping Everton to kick off 2016 with a narrow victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday

Paul Merson reckons that Everton have what it takes to halt Tottenham’s recent good form by beating Spurs at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

The north London side, who have lost just twice this term, have been one of the Premier League’s most consistent sides this season and continued their good form with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Watford on Monday.

That result left Spurs in fourth place in the Premier League table but just four points behind leaders Arsenal heading into the new year.

And although former Arsenal man Merson has been impressed by what he has seen from Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season, he is tipping Everton to snatch a 3-2 victory in Sunday’s clash on Merseyside.

Merson told Sky Sports: “This will be a brilliant game. I watched Everton play Leicester and get beat, watched them play Stoke and get beat. They conceded seven goals in those games, shipping goals, but I think they’ll win this one.

“I haven’t been going against Tottenham recently, but I think Everton will come out on top in a high-scoring encounter.

“They’ve got to keep it a little bit tighter, but I see this being a thriller. Both teams only play one way really, and I think they both have firepower to hurt each other. I’ve watched Everton enough this season to know that if they click, they can go on a big run.”

Pochettino has been tasked with guiding Tottenham back into the Champions League for the first time since Harry Redknapp was in charge at White Hart Lane following last season’s fourth-placed finish in the Premier League.
