Paul Merson predicts the outcome of Arsenal v Chelsea
Paul Merson is confident Arsenal can beat Chelsea for the first time since 2011
Paul Merson says the best Chelsea can hope for is a draw at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Premier League leaders host the defending champions in north London as Arsene Wenger’s side look to cement their title bid this season.
I cannot see Chelsea winning at Arsenal, the best they can hope for is for a draw
The north London side haven’t beaten Chelsea in the Premier League since Robin van Persie scored a hat-trick in a 5-3 victory at Stamford Bridge in 2011.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson is confident Wenger’s current crop can ease past Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea side and secure three important points in the title race.
“After 22 games, Chelsea’s league position tells you all you need to know about their season,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They are where they are for a reason. Last week showed exactly where Chelsea are at the moment. No disrespect to Everton but the way Chelsea celebrated the 3-3 draw like they had won the Champions League speaks volumes.”
Merson continued: “I cannot see Chelsea winning at Arsenal, the best they can hope for is for a draw. If Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez return, and Arsenal score early, I think they’ll run away with it.
“As a Chelsea fan I’d like to back them to get a draw but I have a job to do and I’ve got to be honest, so Arsenal will win here.”
Arsenal are top of the Premier League table but level on points with second-placed Leicester City and a point ahead of Manchester City.
The Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat by the defending Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge earlier this season.
Only Chelsea, West Ham, West Brom and Southampton have beaten Wenger’s side in this season’s Premier League.
