Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool v Arsenal
Paul Merson explains why Arsenal must beat Liverpool if Arsene Wenger's side want to be champions
Paul Merson says Arsenal need to be winning games like their Anfield clash on Wednesday night if the Gunners want to be crowned Premier League champions this season.
The Gunners make the trip to Merseyside to face an injury-ravaged Liverpool outfit as Arsene Wenger’s side look to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
That’s what you’re up against when you are at a top team like Arsenal; other teams lift their game against you
Arsenal are two points clear of second-placed Leicester City and 12 points ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s inconsistent Reds side.
However, former Arsenal playmaker Merson warned Wenger’s men to expect Liverpool to raise their performance level for the visit of the Premier League leaders.
Merson told Sky Sports: “If this was Liverpool v Crystal Palace, then I would say I might fancy Palace, but you know Liverpool will be running round like you have never seen before.
“You look at the way they have played recently and you can bet they won’t be anything like that against Arsenal.
“That’s what you’re up against when you are at a top team like Arsenal; other teams lift their game against you.
“I am sure Liverpool will raise their game but they are struggling to put a team out with all the injuries and I think Arsenal have to win these kind of matches if they are going to win the Premier League.
“I don’t think Liverpool have got enough players at the moment and Arsenal need to win before facing Stoke and Chelsea.”
Liverpool played out a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in their most-recent Premier League meeting with the north London side at Anfield in December 2014.
The Reds were memorable 5-1 winners against Wenger’s side on Merseyside in February 2014 which derailed Arsenal’s title bid and propelled Liverpool to a second-place finish.
