Paul Merson tells Man United to do this in the January transfer window
Paul Merson feels that Manchester United are in need of some big-name signings in the January transfer window
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United need to make at least two marquee signings in the January transfer window to give Red Devils fans some hope heading into the second half of the season.
Louis van Gaal has found himself under intense pressure in recent weeks after a run of eight games without a win in all competitions resulted in United’s Champions League elimination and caused them to drop out of the top four.
United have inevitably been linked with a host of players in recent days as Van Gaal considers bolstering his Red Devils squad during the January transfer window.
And former Arsenal man Merson feels that the Red Devils are in need of some headline-making signings this month.
Merson told Sky Sports: “They do need a lot and they do not need a lot [in the transfer window]. They still have good players who have not all played to their potential yet.
“The thing is, I watched them last week against Swansea and it was a real stop-start. They started really well for 10 minutes, but the next 30-odd minutes it fizzled out. They need to score early and start very well in games – when the second half started, they scored straight away, but if they had not scored, you would not have wanted to be in a Man United shirt as the crowd were really getting impatient.
“But they won that game, they have not been great and they are still there or thereabouts.
“So I think they need to go out and buy a couple of key signings just to lift the fans, because what they are watching at the moment, the fans are not happy with and they are the people you have got to listen to.”
United are preparing for their FA Cup third-round clash against Sheffield United on Saturday as they look to build on their win over Swansea City last weekend.
