Paul Merson tells Pep Guardiola to ignore Man United and Chelsea
Paul Merson believes that Pep Guardiola would be the perfect fit for Arsenal to take over from Arsene Wenger
Paul Merson believes that Pep Guardiola would be perfectly suited to the Arsenal job, but admits that it will be up to Arsene Wenger if the Spaniard takes charge at Emirates Stadium.
Guardiola’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent days after he confirmed that he is set to step down as manager of Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
I think he’s the perfect fit for Arsenal
Manchester City are believed to be the front-runners in the race for the former Barcelona manager’s signature, with Manchester United and Chelsea also reported to be interested in Guardiola’s services.
Arsenal are thought to be outsiders in the chase for Guardiola – but former Gunner Merson believes that the north London club would be the ideal destination for the Spaniard should Wenger guide them to the Premier League title this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ, Merson said: “I think Arsenal is a good fit for him, if I’m being honest.
“I thought Arsene Wenger might have looked at it and thought, ‘Right, I’ve got a good chance of winning the Premier League this year’.
“He could go out in a blaze of glory and win that. He’s done great for the club, and he could say to the board, ‘I’ve been around for a long time… this man fits the bill.’
“Guardiola would come in and nothing has to change, and nothing would change. I think Arsenal don’t have to panic about different ways of playing, and I think he’s the perfect fit for Arsenal.
“But that would be up to Wenger. If Wenger knew now he could win the league, I think he would go to the board and say, ‘Get this man at all costs’.”
Arsenal are currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
