Peter Schmeichel has defended Simon Mignolet in the wake of Jamie Carragher’s recent criticism of the Liverpool goalkeeper.

The former Reds defender wasn’t happy with reports that the 18-time English champions are set to hand the shot stopper a new five-year deal at Anfield.

The Belgium international has endured another error-ridden season so far despite the change in manager after Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers.

But the 27-year-old put pen to paper on a new long-term deal on Monday evening despite recent criticism of the Belgium goalkeeper’s performances.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Schmeichel criticised former team-mate Gary Neville and Carragher for questioning the goalkeeper on Sky Sports last year.

“He was brought in as the next big goalkeeper for Liverpool. He definitely has the talent, he has the pedigree,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.

“Goalkeeping is very, very much about confidence and thinking you are the man.

“But, if every week, you are being questioned about what your performance was. If every goal conceded, [pundits are] looking for his mistakes, then you start believing in that.

“I kind of blame you [Carragher] and Gary [Neville] for killing him on Monday night football.”

The 27-year-old goalkeeper has already racked up 121 appearances for the Merseyside outfit during two-and-a-half seasons at Anfield.

Mignolet kept more clean sheets than any other player in the Premier League in 2015 despite his reputation for calamity performances.
