Phil Thompson: Why Tottenham’s ‘outstanding’ Dele Alli deserves credit
Phil Thompson says Dele Alli's volley against Crystal Palace was the Premier League goal of the season
Phil Thomspon says Dele Alli’s volley against Crystal Palace is the Liverpool legend’s Premier League goal of the season so far.
The England international netted a sensational strike to help Tottenham Hotspur come from behind and secure a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Alli’s brilliant volley was his sixth goal of the season and his third in 10 games in all competitions for Spurs as his influence continues to grow in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson likened Alli’s goal to an effort Frank Worthington scored for Bolton Wanderers in the old First Division.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “It was definitely the goal of the season so far.
“As I said on Soccer Saturday during my commentary of the game, it really reminded me of Worthington’s effort for Bolton.
“But Frank was very experienced at the time, for someone as young as Alli to try something like that in a Premier League game, and for it to come off, it’s just outstanding.”
The 19-year-old midfielder has scored six goals and has made three assists in 20 Premier League games for the north London side so far this season.
Alli moved to Tottenham in a £5m deal from MK Dons in the summer transfer window after he was previously linked with Liverpool.
