Piers Morgan: Arsene Wenger has made mediocre Arsenal signings
Piers Morgan says Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made a fundamental error with transfers
Piers Morgan says Arsene Wenger has signed a lot of mediocre players for Arsenal over the past 10 years.
The Gunners are two points clear at the top of the Premier League table ahead of their trip to Anfield on Wednesday night.
A lot of money was spent on mediocre players and our best players were shipped out
Arsenal have been linked with a host of players in the January transfer window, including Borussia Dortmund centre-forward Pierre-Emerick Aubayameng.
Outspoken Arsenal supporter Morgan believes Wenger has made a fundamental mistake in his approach to the transfer market over the past decade or so, contributing to Arsenal’s lack of success in the Premier League and the Champions League.
“Part of my argument with Wenger’s last 10 years [is that] we used to have tall, powerful players,” Morgan said on BBC Radio Five Live.
“He made a decision to go with lighter, more mobile players. It was a fundamental error.
“Wenger bought a lot of players who were not very good for a lot of money. A lot of money was spent on mediocre players and our best players were shipped out, like Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie.”
Arsenal moved two points ahead of second-placed Leicester City in the Premier League table after a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in their most-recent outing at the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners are facing a big month which should test their title credentials ahead of Premier League games against Liverpool, Stoke City and Chelsea.
