Ray Wilkins compares Tottenham starlet to Chelsea man

Eric Dier reminds Ray Wilkins of Chelsea man John Obi Mikel...

Ray Wilkins says that Tottenham starlet Eric Dier reminds him of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

Dier has earned plenty of new admirers for his fine string of performances in central midfield for Spurs this season to help Mauricio Pochettino’s men up to fourth place in the Premier League table, losing just twice in the process.

The 21-year-old has scored three goals in 19 Premier League games for Spurs and has also featured six times in the Europa League for the Lilywhites to help them reach the last 32 of the competition.

Former Chelsea man Wilkins has been thoroughly impressed by what he has seen from Dier this season and says that his style of play is similar to Mikel’s.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wilkins said: “Dier has been outstanding – he really has played a good season for Spurs and he gives them that reliability. He just sits in front of the back four… if a centre-half gets injured, he can naturally play centre-half so he’s a good foil to have in your team.

“At times, it’s vitally important [to have an understanding with Dele Alli] especially in the defensive areas. He’s a bit like John Obi Mikel, nothing spectacular but he understands the role and he does it to a very good effect.”

Tottenham, who are currently six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, host high-flying Leicester City at White Hart Lane on Sunday in the third round of the FA Cup.
