Ray Wilkins says Louis van Gaal needs to sign players with pace and power for Manchester United.

The Red Devils twice surrendered a lead at St James’s Park on Tuesday night as Newcastle defender Paul Dummett scored a late equaliser to secure a 3-3 draw for the hosts.

The 20-time English champions have only beaten Swansea City in their last eight Premier League games since a 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road in November.

Former United midfielder Wilkins addressed the biggest weaknesses in Van Gaal’s current Red Devils side ahead of their trip to bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Wilkins told talkSPORT: “No matter where he’s been, he’s been a superstar.

“But this is a different task, it’s Manchester United, probably one of the biggest clubs on the planet, certainly in the top three.

“He’s spent a lot of money, somewhere along the line the pressure will tell.

“They are probably playing his brand of football which he enjoys. Now in Spain and Holland, that’s fine. But it’s not fine at Manchester United.

“They need a bit of gung-ho, a bit of pace, a bit of power.”

England captain Wayne Rooney appeared to have scored a stunning 79th-minute winner before Paul Dummett’s deflected strike beat David De Gea on the stroke of full-time to rescue a point for the hosts.
