Robbie Savage says Everton defender John Stones is similar to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand

Robbie Savage says Manchester United target John Stones reminds him of Rio Ferdinand.

The Everton centre-half has been linked with a move to the Red Devils in the January transfer window, whilst defending champions Chelsea are also thought to be keen on the 20-year-old.

The England international, who is thought to command a £50m price tag, has been a mainstay of Roberto Martinez’s Everton defence in this season’s Premier League.

Former Birmingham City and Leicester City midfielder Savage can see similarities between elegant Stones and United legend Feridnand amid talk of the Everton star heading to Old Trafford this month.

Savage told BBC Sport: “John Stones reminds you of Rio Ferdinand, he does not immediately smash the ball out, he wants to keep it. He takes a risk but more times than not he comes away with the ball.”

Stones, 21, has made 18 appearances in all competitions for Everton so far this season.
