Steve McManaman: Man United bonkers to pay £60m for Renato Sanches
Steve McMnaman questions Manchester United's reported offer for Benfica teenager Renato Sanches
Steve McManaman has laughed off reports that Manchester United will spend £60m on Benfica teenager Renato Sanches.
According to the British media, the Red Devils are reportedly lining up a £60m offer for the 18-year-old as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his attacking options.
£60m for a teenager is bonkers
The 20-time English champions already made Anthony Martial the most expensive teenager in Europe after their £36m deal for the Monaco forward in the summer, which could rise to £52m.
Former Liverpool and Manchester City winger McManaman reckons United are bonkers to consider paying £60m for a teenager.
“That’s a ridiculous story, surely,” McManaman told BT Sport.
“The deal must be £30m with incentives. It must be incentivised, which you don’t mind if you’re successful over a long time. £60m for a teenager is bonkers.”
The Portugal Under-19 international has been a key part of Benfica’s title push so far this season.
He has already scored two goals in 11 league appearances, as well as playing in two of their Champions League group-stage games.
United have also been linked with a move for Southampton striker Sadio Mane in the January transfer window.
