Ex-Chelsea star blasts ‘shocking’ Man United despite victory

Tony Cascarino brands Manchester United's first-half performance against Swansea City as "shocking"

Tony Cascarino has branded Manchester United’s first-half performance against Swansea City as “shocking” and has warned that the Red Devils cannot afford to continue to rely on Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney to get them out of trouble.

United secured their first win in eight attempts in all competitions as goals from Martial and Rooney notched up a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday in their first game of 2016.

The Red Devils have struggled to produce consistent form under Van Gaal this season and were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage last month.

And former Chelsea man Cascarino was less than impressed by United’s performance against the Swans at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Cascarino told Sky Sports: “For 45 minutes Man United were shocking. Again and again Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney are expected to take the only opportunity they are getting, which they managed to do this weekend.

“But, over the long term, that’s not going to win you football matches as it is impossible to expect forwards to take every chance.”

Saturday’s victory left United, who finished fourth in Van Gaal’s first campaign in charge, in fifth place in the Premier League table and three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur after 20 games of the season.
