Wayne Rooney issues Man United warning ahead of FA Cup clash

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is wary of the threat posed by Derby County on Friday night...

Wayne Rooney has warned Manchester United that they will have to be at their best if they want to beat Derby County and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup on Friday night.

Louis van Gaal’s men head into the cup clash looking to return to winning ways following the disappointment of their 1-0 defeat by Southampton in the Premier League at Old Trafford last weekend.

United have struggled to find consistent form in recent weeks and have only won two of their last 10 Premier League games to leave them five points adrift of the top four.

And Red Devils skipper Rooney concedes that United need to rediscover their top form quickly ahead of Friday’s test.

Rooney told United’s website: “I’m sure they will be really up for it with their crowd and we will be up for it as we’ve experienced these games.

“The players who joined us last year and played against Cambridge and Yeovil will have seen that an FA Cup tie like this is more of a battle than a football game. We have to be ready for that and be ready for a tough game as the cup is full of surprises.

“Derby have nothing to lose. No-one is expecting them to win and they will try to cause an upset. We know that and have to be ready for that. It will be a difficult night for us, Sheffield United at home was a tough game, so we have to be ready to battle and win the battle. Hopefully then our qualities will show through.”

Rooney has endured a disappointing season by his high standards. The England captain has scored six goals and made two assists in 19 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils so far this term.
