Glenn Hoddle: How Arsenal can beat Barcelona
Glenn Hoddle urges Arsenal to defend deep if the Gunners are to have any hope of beating Barcelona
Glenn Hoddle says Arsenal need to defend deep against Barcelona if the Gunners want to beat the Champions League holders on Tuesday night.
The north London side welcome the La Liga champions to the Emirates Stadium after a disappointing goalless draw with Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.
If Arsenal open up and try to make this a football games, Arsenal will really come unstuck
Barcelona, meanwhile, warmed up for their trip to the English capital with a 2-1 victory over strugglers Las Palmas.
Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Hoddle offered Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger some advice on how to beat the Spanish side.
“For me, Arsenal have to defend really deep and make sure they break and counter against Barcelona. It is the only hope,” Hoddle told Unibet.
Hoddle added: “If Arsenal open up and try to make this a football games, Arsenal will really come unstuck.”
Arsenal came from behind to beat Barcelona 2-1 when the teams last met in London in the 2010/11 round of 16, Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin overturning David Villa’s first-half goal.
Barcelona recovered with a 3-1 second-leg success in which Lionel Messi scored twice. Sergio Busquets had briefly given Arsenal hope with an own goal that made it 1-1.
