Arsene Wenger discusses ‘interesting’ new Arsenal signing
Arsene Wenger runs the rule over Mohamed Elneny's Arsenal debut on Saturday
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he was left impressed by Mohamed Elneny’s Arsenal debut on Saturday as the midfielder helped the Gunners beat Burnley 2-1 in the FA Cup.
The Egypt international was handed his first start for the north London club at Emirates Stadium following his January transfer from FC Basel earlier this month.
Elneny, 23, impressed in midfield for Arsene Wenger’s men as they continued their defence of the FA Cup crown with victory over Burnley to book their place in the fifth round of the tournament.
And speaking after the game, Wenger admitted that he had been impressed by what he saw from Elneny on his first run-out for the Gunners.
Speaking to Arsenal’s website after the game, Wenger said: I think he has to adapt to the power side of the game but he has shown interesting ingredients like game intelligence, mobility and technical ability and had some good shots. He will be a very interesting player for us.
“I think overall we had a good performance and we wanted to respond with a win. We wanted to qualify and the first 20 minutes looked like it could be all us but then suddenly when they equalised it became a different game.
“You could see they are a good side that just won against Derby 4-1 and we needed a strong performance. In the second half we deserved to win the game. At the moment it [a third consecutive FA Cup] is still a dream but the dream is still alive as we are still in it.”
Elneny could be involved once again when Arsenal host Southampton in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Gunners are currently in third place in the Premier League table.
