Arsene Wenger replies when asked if Arsenal could sign Chelsea star

Arsene Wenger rules out a possible Arsenal swoop for Chelsea defender John Terry in the summer

Arsene Wenger has described John Terry as a great player but insists that Arsenal would have no interest in signing the defender in the summer.

The veteran defender’s future is set to be a source of speculation in the coming weeks after he announced that he is likely to leave Chelsea at the end of the season on Sunday.

Chelsea have since insisted that the player could still be handed a new contract before the end of the current campaign, but as things stand, the former England international looks set to leave Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal boss Wenger was asked for his take on Terry’s situation this week, and although the Gunners manager is a keen admirer of the Chelsea captain, he was quick to rule out a summer transfer swoop for the defender.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Wenger said: “No [Arsenal will not sign Terry], because he is at the end of his career and he has spent his career at Chelsea. If he wants to play longer, I am sure he will play for Chelsea.”

He continued: “He was not only a great player, he certainly still is, but he was also a great coach on the pitch.

“I saw him here once at London Colney playing with the under-21s and the way he coached the team as a player was absolutely marvellous.

“He was a real leader and he had a great career as well, let’s not forget that. That’s never a coincidence. The guys who last such a long time have something special. He was the symbol of cohesion inside Chelsea’s club because him, Lampard, Drogba and Cech were the players who carried the club’s values for long periods. When you lose players like that you’re always in danger.”
