Arsene Wenger: This Arsenal player does not get enough credit
Arsene Wenger insists that David Ospina deserves more credit for his recent performances for Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has claimed that David Ospina did not get enough credit for his performances for Arsenal last season.
The Colombia international was a regular fixture in the Gunners’ first-team last term and made 18 Premier League appearances for the north London club.
Ospina has found his first-team opportunities significantly more limited this season following the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
Cech has been a regular fixture in Arsenal’s first team this season and has started all of the Gunners’ Premier League games so far this term.
However, Wenger insists that he would not have made a move to sign a new goalkeeper unless a shot-stopper of Cech’s quality became available, and feels that Ospina was a consistent performer for the Gunners last season.
Speaking to Arsenal’s magazine, Wenger said: “I personally believe David Ospina did not get enough credit for what he delivered last year, which for me was absolutely exceptional.
“I want to say that I would not have changed the goalkeeper had an opportunity like Petr Cech not come up. That was basically an undiscussable case when he became available.
“I was very happy with David Ospina – I think he is a world-class goalkeeper. There is a good connection between them as well and that is a gift for the manager and the coaches.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
