Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Aston Villa v Liverpool

Mark Lawrenson is expecting to see Liverpool return to winning ways at Aston Villa on Sunday

Mark Lawrenson is tipping Liverpool to return to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Reds head into the game on the back of the disappointment of their FA Cup exit at the hands of West Ham United in midweek.

Liverpool also squandered a two-goal lead as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Sunderland at Anfield last weekend.

Indeed, the Merseyside outfit have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League all season and have only won three of their last 10 top-flight games.

However, former Liverpool man Lawrenson is tipping the Reds to secure the three points when they travel to basement club Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Aston Villa beat Norwich last time out, but I think that said more about Norwich than Villa’s survival prospects.

“Liverpool went out of the FA Cup on Tuesday but I was heartened by their performance and the way they played through midfield.

“The only problem was that, until Daniel Sturridge came on after an hour, the Reds did not have a striker who looked like he was going to score because Christian Benteke was struggling.

“In a team who play to his strengths, like Villa did, he will be a success but it is not working for him at the moment.

“Sturridge looked sharp when he came off the bench and I would be inclined to start with him on Sunday. If he is fit, what is the point of holding him back?”
