Avram Grant: How Arsenal can stop Lionel Messi and Barcelona

Avram Grant says there is one thing Arsenal can do to stop Lionel Messi and his Barcelona team-mates

Avram Grant says there is one thing Arsenal can do to stop Lionel Messi and his Barcelona striker partners: pray.

The Gunners host the La Liga champions in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

Arsenal are aiming to beat Barcelona for just the second time in 10 attempts but face a side that has already scored 67 goals in 25 La Liga games so far this season.

When former Chelsea manager Grant was asked what Arsenal could do to stop Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, the Ghana head coach replied: “I was at a convention a few weeks ago and they asked me how to stop Messi, and I said the first thing you need to do is pray.”

Grant added that Barcelona’s front free of Messi, Neymar and Suarez is the best attack that he has seen during his professional career.

“No doubt it is the best three forwards I’ve seen in my life. The combination between them,” Grant told Sky Sports.

“Even the last game, sometimes it can be hard for them and play your own game.”

Suarez netted five times in five games in the Champions League group-stage, while Messi scored three goals and Neymar netted twice.
