Avram Grant has hailed Antonio Conte as a “brilliant coach” after reports Chelsea will appoint the Italian as their manager in the summer.

The former Juventus boss is currently in charge of the Italian national team and is preparing for this summer’s European championships.

Conte established himself as one of Europe’s top coaches after he led Juventus to three successive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia.

According to reports in the British media, Conte has agreed a deal in principle to become Chelsea manager when his contract with Italy expires after Euro 2016.

And former Blues manager Grant, who led the west London side to the cusp of Premier League and Champions League glory in 2008, spoke of his respect for the former Juventus defender.

“We need to wait to see if it is true. He is a good coach. He did brilliant for Juventus and Italy. He is a very nice guy,” Grant told Sky Sports.

Grant added: “Conte has a lot of experience but all the others [Diego Simeone and Massimiliano Allegri] that were mentioned have the experience.”

Chelsea sacked Jose Mourinho in December after run of nine Premier League defeats.
