Jan Aage Fjortoft raises doubts over Liverpool signing Joel Matip

Jan Aage Fjortoft has questioned whether Liverpool signing Joel Matip is strong enough for the Premier League.

The Reds are set to sign the Schalke defender in the summer transfer window after Liverpool concluded a pre-contract agreement with the 24-year-old on Tuesday.

Matip has established himself as a key part of Schalke’s side after he broke through at the Bundesliga club in 2009.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already hailed the incoming signing as a bargain after the Reds secured their first free transfer ahead of the summer.

But Bundesliga expert Fjortoft raised doubts over Matip’s ability to defend one-on-one against attackers ahead of his Premier League switch.

Matip has scored three goals and has made one assist 21 Bundesliga games in the 2015/16 campaign.

The 24-year-old has reprensented Cameroon on 27 occasions after he made his debut in 2010.
