Chris Waddle: Why Chelsea star Eden Hazard shouldn’t be criticised

Chris Waddle defends under-fire Chelsea forward Eden Hazard after 2-1 Champions League loss to PSG

Chris Waddle has defended Eden Hazard after the Chelsea forward’s subdued performance in a 2-1 loss at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

The Belgium international touched the ball 48 times during 71 minutes at Parc des Princes before Guus Hiddink brought on Oscar to replace Hazard.

I wouldn’t put Hazard in my team if I’m going to judge him as a full-back

The 25-year-old, who is still waiting to score his first Premier League goal of the season, has made no secret of his interest in a move to PSG in the future.

Unsurprisingly, Hazard’s ineffective performance prompted criticism from some supporters on Twitter given PSG’s reported interest in the reigning PFA player of the year.

But former England and Tottenham midfielder Waddle was quick to defend Hazard’s performance in Hiddink’s system in the French capital.

“I thought first half he put a shift in,” Waddle told BBC Sport.

“You’ve got to remember Chelsea were playing away in an intimidating atmosphere. He got pushed back and he did most of his work in his own half. PSG flooded the wings.

“Hazard and Pedro were asked to play as full-backs. You’re better off putting two midfield guys there who can block the PSG runners off.

“They’ve been judged on how they’ve done defensively. I wouldn’t put Hazard in my team if I’m going to judge him as a full-back.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the deadlock in the first half with a deflected free-kick before John Obi Mikel levelled on the stroke of half-time.
