Garth Crooks comments on Jesse Lingard’s display in Chelsea v Man United

Garth Crooks has been impressed by what he has seen from Jesse Lingard for Manchester United in recent weeks

Garth Crooks believes that Jesse Lingard is worthy of a spot in the England team following his recent performances for Manchester United.

The 23-year-old has been a regular fixture in Louis van Gaal’s first-team in recent weeks and impressed once again as he netted his side’s goal at Chelsea during Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

Lingard’s superb turn and shot into the top corner in the box put his side ahead before they were pegged back in stoppage time by Diego Costa’s equaliser.

The youngster has scored two goals and made one assist in his last three appearances for United.

And Crooks feels that the attacker is proving himself worthy of a spot in Roy Hodgson’s England squad as Euro 2016 draws nearer.

Crooks told BBC Sport: “I like this lad a lot. His performance against Chelsea was impressive but his finish will have everyone talking about him.

“The way he controlled the ball with his back to goal and smashed it past Thibaut Courtois on the half-turn was superb.

“This is a player who can play but also score goals. I suppose you would expect that from a Manchester United player but one journalist sitting next to me at Stamford Bridge asked if I thought he was ready for England.

“When you can play like that away at Chelsea for Manchester United and score goals past one of the best keepers in the world, I think you’re ready.”
