Glenn Hoddle issues Memphis Depay warning ahead of Man United v Arsenal
Glenn Hoddle says Memphis Depay needs to prove his worth against Arsenal after impressing for Man United on Thursday
Glenn Hoddle says Memphis Depay still needs to prove his talent against top opposition after the winger helped Manchester United book their place in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old produced one of his best United performances as the home side sealed a 5-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday night.
Memphis scored his fifth European goal of the season in the dying minutes of the clash at Old Trafford to take his tally to seven in all competitions in his first season at United.
However, former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Hoddle believes there is much more to come from the Dutch winger after another impressive performance against sub-standard opposition.
“There are stories that there is a one-on-one chat with all the players. It certainly worked with him,” Hoddle told ITV Sport.
“He looked more relaxed. He probably would have told him to take the fear out of his game. He looked confident.”
Hoddle added: “For me, he played like that against Brugge and we didn’t see enough of him in the Champions League group stage.
“It was against lesser opposition tonight as well. The kid has talent but he has to do it on Sunday against Arsenal.”
Memphis moved to United in a £25m deal from Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven in May 2015 ahead of the summer transfer window.
