Glenn Hoddle reacts to Man United’s 2-1 loss to Sunderland

Glenn Hoddle has his say after Manchester United are beaten 2-1 by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light

Glenn Hoddle believes that Manchester United’s hopes of finishing in the top four this season are all but over after Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Sunderland.

Wahbi Khazri gave the home side the lead in the third minute when his free-kick crept past David De Gea in the Manchester United goal.

United drew level before half-time when Anthony Martial fired into the bottom left corner from close range.

However, the Black Cats secured the three points when Lamine Kone’s header bounced in off De Gea’s back in the 82nd minute.

The result left United fifth in the Premier League table and six points behind Manchester City, but the gap to the top four could be as much as nine points after this weekend’s round of fixtures.

And former Tottenham boss Hoddle feels that the Red Devils now face a serious uphill task if they are to finish in the top four.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Hoddle said: “I think they’re adrift now and after the weekend the maximum could be nine.

“They’ve got a lot of work to do. They’ve got the top four teams to play and they might lose them. For me, it’s a big day for United. I felt they didn’t do enough.”
