Ian Wright has rubbished Piers Morgan’s criticism of Arsene Wenger after Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat by Barcelona on Tuesday night.

The Gunners held out for 71 minutes before Neymar and Luis Suarez combined on the counter-attack to tee up Lionel Messi for the opener at the Emirates Stadium.

Mathieu Flamini was punished in the 83rd minute for bringing down Messi in Petr Cech’s penalty area and the Argentina international dispatched the ensuing spot-kick.

Arsenal now face a mammoth task in Camp Nou on 16 March if the Gunners want to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.

Outspoken Arsenal fan Morgan was quick to mock Wenger’s Champions League record following the defeat.

However, ex-Gunners striker Wright defended Wenger after losing to the reigning European champions.

Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Manchester City ahead of their clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
