Ian Wright reacts to Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Barcelona
Ian Wright reflects on Arsenal's 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie
Ian Wright admitted that Barcelona’s quality told in the second half after Lionel Messi scored twice to secure a 2-0 win over Arsenal and take a big step towards qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals.
Arsenal defended well in the first half and managed to head into half-time with the score at 0-0 despite the Catalan side dominating possession.
However, Messi gave the visitors the lead in the 71st minute when he finished off a sweeping counter-attack after combining with Neymar.
And the Argentina international scored a penalty in the 83rd minute after substitute Mathieu Flamini clumsily brought down Messi in the box.
The result leaves Arsenal with a significant uphill battle heading into the return leg at Camp Nou in three weeks’ time.
Speaking on BT Sport after the game, Wright said: “[Luis] Suarez didn’t have a particularly great game, Neymar did a couple of nice bits, Messi, you could say, was quiet.
“But the quality for the first goal is what they’re all about.
“You cannot keep them quiet for that long and Arsenal – brilliant effort, but so tough.”
Arsenal’s next game is a Premier League trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, with the Gunners currently third in the table.
