Jamie Carragher has taken to social media to question Rio Ferdinand’s comments claiming that Manchester United could end up like Liverpool if they are not careful.

United have struggled to produce consistent performances under manager Louis van Gaal this season and have failed to challenge for the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager back in 2013.

There has been widespread media speculation this month claiming that Jose Mourinho is set to take charge at Manchester United in the summer should the club opt to sack Van Gaal at the end of the season.

Former United defender Ferdinand compared the Red Devils’ current situation to that of Liverpool, telling the Daily Mail: “We don’t want to be a repeat of what Liverpool have gone through. Manchester United don’t want that long time in the wilderness of not really winning or being successful and not challenging for titles.”

However, Carragher appeared to take exception to the remarks judging by his short response on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

Carragher tweeted:
