Jermaine Jenas: Arsenal need to sign world-class striker after Barcelona loss

Jermaine Jenas believes Arsenal need to sign a world-class striker

Jermaine Jenas says Oliver Giroud’s performance against Barcelona on Tuesday night highlights that Arsenal still need a world-class striker.

Arsene Wenger’s side suffered a big blow in their bid to reach a first Champions League quarter-final since 2010 after a 2-0 loss to Barcelona in the first leg.

Lionel Messi made the 71st-minute breakthrough at The Emirates after a superb counter-attacking move before the Argentina international netted a penalty with seven minutes remaining.

Giroud wasted a number of chances to score a vital first-leg goal for the north London side but was unable to beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen, while the Frenchman struggled to link up with his team-mates.

Speaking to BBC Sport following the 2-0 defeat by Barcelona, Jenas suggested that Wenger needs to sign a top striker.

“I’m a fan of Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud but he’s had one of those night where the whole stadium will probably be saying we need a world class striker,” Jenas said.

Giroud has failed to score in his last eight games in all competitions for the Gunners.
