John Barnes: How Liverpool can beat Man City
Liverpool legend John Barnes reveals the secret behind beating Man City
John Barnes says Liverpool must outscore Manchester City if the Reds are to win Sunday’s League Cup final.
The Citizens are the Premier League’s most-profilic club after an impressive return of 48 goals in 26 top-flight games so far this season.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have only managed to score 38 times in their 26 Premier League outings, whilst conceding 36 goals in a disappointing campaign.
However, the Reds were 4-1 winners against the Eastlands outfit in their Premier League meeting in November thanks to Eliaquim Mangala putting the ball in his own net and goals from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Martin Skrtel.
Former Liverpool captain Barnes doesn’t believe that victory at the Etihad Stadium will have much of a say on Sunday’s League Cup final at Wembley.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a blueprint for beating City because Liverpool have played that way before and lost,” Barnes told Sky Sports.
“I don’t know whether they underestimated us but they performed badly that day.
“What you do have to do is defend very well against them and recognise that defensively they are not the greatest team. In my opinion it’s a question of who outscores who.”
Liverpool were 6-0 winners against Aston Villa in their most-recent Premier League game.
City have lost to Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur in their last two top-flight outings.
