John Barnes makes prediction about Liverpool’s top-four chances
John Barnes rules out a top-four finish for former club Liverpool this season
John Barnes doesn’t believe winning the League Cup can inspire Liverpool to a top-four finish this season.
The Reds will face Manchester City in the Capital One Cup showpiece at Wembley on Sunday afternoon in Jurgen Klopp’s first final as Liverpool manager.
There’s an outside chance but for me it’s more the fact that we will have won a trophy in Klopp’s first year
The Merseyside outfit are currently in eighth place and nine points behind Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Liverpool appointed Klopp as Brendan Rodgers’s successor in October after a disappointing start to the 2015/16 season.
And Barnes believes securing some silverware and finishing the season in style would be a satisfactory end to Klopp’s first campaign in charge at Anfield.
“It will be a boost to finish the season strongly, however I don’t think we can finish in the top four now because we are so far behind,” Barnes told Sky Sports.
“So while it will be a boost, I don’t think it’s necessarily enough to get us into the Champions League places.
“There’s an outside chance but for me it’s more the fact that we will have won a trophy in Klopp’s first year. That’s the biggest factor for me.”
Klopp’s side host Augsburg in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday evening.
Liverpool played out a goalless draw with the Bundesliga club in the first leg at Augsburg Arena last week.
The Reds were 6-0 winners against Aston Villa in their last Premier League game.
