Johnny Giles: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn’t contribute to Arsenal
Johnny Giles says Arsenal forward Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has never performed for the Gunners
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has never made a significant contribution to Arsenal, according to Johnny Giles.
The England international was caught by Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano in the first half at the Emirates Stadium before the 22-year-old was forced off early in the second half.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been limited to just nine starts in the Premier League this season due to fitness and form issues.
The 22-year-old moved to the north London side in a £10m deal from Southampton in 2010, but has only scored seven times in 100 Premier League games over four-and-a-half seasons.
Former Manchester United midfielder Giles was critical of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s development at The Emirates.
“Chamberlain has never done it for Arsenal. He has been there five years now. He has not shown anything,” Giles told Newstalk.
“He should be maturing as a player. He should be a player who is really contributing to Arsenal. I don’t see it with Chamberlain at all.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain has scored one goal in 22 Premier League games for the north London side so far this season.
The Gunners suffered a 2-0 loss to La Liga holders Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday night.
