Jose Mourinho has said that he expects to make a return to football management “soon” amid reports linking him with the Manchester United job.

The Portuguese coach has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December following the west London club’s disastrous start to the season.

For sure I’ll be back soon. I need competition every week

There have been widespread reports claiming that United are lining up Mourinho as a potential successor to Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer.

Now, the former Real Madrid and Porto boss has revealed that he is hoping to make a return to management shortly.

Mourinho told the Daily Mail: “For sure I’ll be back soon.

“I always said I need competition – I need competition every week.

“I am not enjoying it [not working]. I can have my family, I can have my friends, I can have my quiet life, which I also like, and I can have my football. I can have everything together and I don’t need to give up on one of them.

“To be fully happy I need everything, so I go back to football. I think it’s my natural habitat. I have worked since I can remember, and as a manager since 2000.”

Mourinho added that he plans to stay in London with his family.

“We decided to come to London and, at the moment, I don’t have a job. I don’t know where football will take me because in football, you never know, but for sure, as a family, our home will be in London,” he said.

With the news that Pep Guardiola will be taking over at Manchester City in the summer, the focus has turned to United and whether they will look to make a managerial change at the end of the season following what has been an underwhelming campaign under Van Gaal.

Recent reports in the Spanish media have claimed that Van Gaal will leave his post as United boss on 30 June, with Mourinho officially set to take charge on 1 July.

The Red Devils head into Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea five points adrift of the top four.
