Juan Mata sends heartfelt message to Chelsea fans after Man United draw
Juan Mata was humbled by his reception at Stamford Bridge on Sunday...
Juan Mata thanked Chelsea’s fans for giving him a “special” reception after the Spanish playmaker was applauded off the pitch during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
Mata joined United from Chelsea back in January 2014 and was a favourite amongst the fans at the west London club before his move up north.
The Spaniard played most of the game but was replaced by Ander Herrera in stoppage time.
Chelsea’s fans gave the playmaker a warm reception as he made his way off the pitch, and Mata was quick to pay tribute to his former club’s supporters after the game.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Mata said: “It was special. I’m always grateful.
“I spent two and a half great years here and they were amazing for me since the first day.
“It’s always special to play here and I really appreciate it. I’m really grateful.”
After a goalless first half in west London, Jesse Lingard put the visitors ahead with a superb turn and shot into the top corner in the 61st minute.
However, Chelsea drew level in the 92nd minute when Diego Costa found a way past David De Gea and fired into the empty net.
