Jurgen Klopp warns Liverpool players over West Ham star
Jurgen Klopp runs the rule over West Ham playmaker Dmitri Payet
Jurgen Klopp says Dmitri Payet is a match-winner ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth-round replay at West Ham United on Tuesday night.
The Reds make the trip to east London as the Merseyside outfit look to beat the Hammers for the first time in all competitions this season.
He can decide games, for sure, but only if we give him the opportunity
Liverpool have already lost twice to Slaven Bilic’s side in the Premier League, whilst the two sides played out a goalless draw at Anfield in the FA Cup last month.
Remarkably, Payet hasn’t netted against Liverpool this term despite Bilic’s men scoring five goals without reply in the Premier League.
However, Liverpool manager Klopp earmarked the French playmaker as West Ham’s danger man ahead of Tuesday night’s game.
“We [the coaching staff] played against Payet when he was at Marseille, so I knew him before,” Klopp told his pre-match media conference.
“How I understand football in these times, [we] should not try to find a solution only for Payet, the solution is to avoid the passes to Payet.
“If he doesn’t have the ball too often then it’s not possible to have the biggest influence on the game, that’s how football should work I think. We have no player we can say, ‘come on, follow him, if necessary to the restroom’.
“We play our football. He can decide games, for sure, but only if we give him the opportunity.”
West Ham were 3-0 winners against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League earlier this season.
The Reds also suffered a 2-0 defeat by the east London side at Upton Park in their first game of 2016.
