Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Sunderland test

Jurgen Klopp delivers the latest Liverpool injury news ahead of Saturday's clash with Sunderland

Martin Skrtel has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury and will be out for a further two or three weeks, Jurgen Klopp has revealed as he delivered the latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Saturday’s clash with Sunderland at Anfield.

The defender has been out of action since being forced off at Watford on 20 December and was due to start training at Melwood in the coming days.

However, the centre-half will be out of action for longer than initially anticipated.

Klopp told a news conference at Melwood on Friday: “We had the problem with Martin Skrtel, a little bit re-injured. He needs another two or three weeks, we have to see.”

There was some positive news on the injury front for Liverpool ahead of Saturday’s clash with the Black Cats, however.

Philippe Coutinho, Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge have all been stepping up their respective rehabilitations and the German coach revealed that he is hoping to have all three players back available for selection shortly.

Klopp continued: “Daniel is back in training, that’s great, since two days ago,” explained the manager.

“Everything looks good in this moment. Now it is normal football training – really good for us and good for him.

“The day before yesterday he was together with Phil and Divock. If you see these three players then you know what you have missed for a few weeks.

“With Divock, Phil and Daniel in training, of course you think after five minutes maybe we should take them back into the squad.

“But that’s the moment to say ‘come on’; there are another three sessions which we can use and they are available for West Ham, that’s the idea in this moment if nothing happens in the next session.”

Liverpool are currently nine points adrift of the top four.
