Louis van Gaal has revealed that Phil Jones is edging closer to a return to action for Manchester United after he took part in training on Friday ahead of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.

The 23-year-old England defender has been out of action since being substituted at half-time during the 2-1 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford at the turn of the year but is now closing in on a return.

The Dutchman also revealed that midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will definitely miss Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge due to the knee injury he picked up during United’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Sheffield United last month.

The Manchester United manager went on to reveal that defender Marcos Rojo is progressing well in his recover from a dislocated shoulder but it still unable to make a return to full training.

Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia remain as United’s two long-term absentees.
