Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Liverpool v Man City
Mark Lawrenson is tipping Liverpool to win a record ninth League Cup final
Mark Lawrenson has backed Jurgen Klopp to come out on top in Sunday’s League Cup final between Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Reds secured a morale-boosting 1-0 win against Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday night as James Milner’s penalty secured their place in the last-16 draw.
Manchester City, meanwhile, were justified in their decision to rest their big names for their FA Cup defeat last Sunday as the Citizens were 3-1 winners in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Kyiv on Wednesday night.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes the Reds will need their best players to be on form to beat the City but the retired Republic of Ireland international is still backing Klopp to win his first League Cup.
“I don’t think Jurgen Klopp’s side will catch City napping again like they did that day, but I am still backing Klopp to come out on top,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“City have got the better players but I think this will be one of those games where Liverpool’s manager gets them over the line.
“In a one-off shoot-out, I think Klopp will find a way to win, although I didn’t say that to those City fans at Kiev Airport.”
Liverpool are in eighth place in the Premier League table and nine points behind Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
