Michael Owen states his prediction for Liverpool v Man City
Michael Owen looks ahead to Sunday's League Cup final between Liverpool and Manchester City at Wembley
Michael Owen is tipping Manchester City to lift the League Cup on Sunday after a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Wembley final.
The Reds head into the game looking to claim their first piece of silverware since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield back in October.
City warmed up for Sunday’s showdown at Wembley with a 3-1 Champions League win at Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday night as they took a big step towards reaching the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.
And Owen believes that the Citizens will have too much for their opponents in Sunday’s cup final at Wembley.
Writing in his blog for Colossus Bets, Owen said: “It may well be stating the obvious, but the League Cup final is a very important match for Liverpool after a stop-start season.
“They put up one of their best performances – indeed one of the best by any side in any league match this season – when winning 4-1 at the Etihad in November, and their supporters will be hoping for more of the same here.
“Having played Augsburg in the Europa League on Thursday is hardly the ideal preparation for a Cup final, but at least it was at home, and City played in Kiev on Wednesday, so that probably equals things out.
“City haven’t been impressive recently – besides their 3-1 win in Kiev on Wednesday, that is – but you have to think one of their many match-winners will stand up to be counted on the big stage, and I take them to win 2-1.”
Liverpool have failed to find consistent form in the Premier League since Klopp’s appointment and are currently eighth in the table.
City, meanwhile, have suffered back to back defeats in the top flight and are in fourth place in the table.
