David De Gea and Wayne Rooney were quick to express their excitement after Manchester United were pitted against Liverpool in the Europa League last-16 draw.

The Reds secured their spot in Friday’s pot after a 1-0 aggregate win against Bundesliga club Augsburg at Anfield on Thursday evening after James Milner’s winner.

Louis van Gaal’s United had to come from behind against Danish champions FC Midtjylland before sealing a 5-1 win at Old Trafford last night.

Liverpool and United were rewarded for their Europa League efforts with a last-16 meeting as the England’s most-successful clubs were drawn against each other in Europe for the first time.

United skipper Rooney referenced the last-16 draw as the injured striker heaped praise on his team-mates for Thursday night’s win.

De Gea, who missed both legs against the Danish side after he picked up an injury during the warm-up before the first leg, issued a United rallying cry shortly after the last-16 draw.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren also took to Twitter as the Croatia international presumably targets a return to first-team action ahead of the Europa League last-16 first leg.
