Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Arsenal v Hull
Mark Lawrenson is backing Arsenal to triumph in the FA Cup for a third successive season
Mark Lawrenson has tipped Arsenal to beat Hull City en route to successfully defending their FA Cup crown this season.
Arsene Wenger’s side are looking to win the domestic cup competition for the third successive season after beating Hull and Aston Villa at Wembley in 2014 and 2015.
We saw the quality of Arsenal’s squad with Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck both coming off the bench and scoring important goals against Leicester
The Gunners will start a big week in their season with a home tie against Hull on Saturday afternoon before games against Barcelona and Manchester United in the next eight days.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes the north London side will ease past Steve Bruce’s Hull outfit and seal their place in the sixth-round draw before preparing to face the Champions League holders.
“This is the third year in a row that Arsenal have played Hull in the FA Cup, and a repeat of the 2014 final, and I think it will also be the third year in a row that the Gunners end up on top,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“It is an attractive tie for Hull, but they are top of the Championship and promotion is their priority – they can see the pot of gold.
“So I am not sure what kind of team Tigers boss Steve Bruce will pick, because he will not want a replay.
“We saw the quality of Arsenal’s squad with Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck both coming off the bench and scoring important goals against Leicester.
“I don’t see the manner of that win as being a turning point in the season because I was backing Arsene Wenger’s side to win the title anyway, but it will definitely boost their belief that they can do it.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup more times than any other club after the Gunners sealed their 12th success in the competition last season thanks to a 4-0 win against Villa.
Wenger’s side are in third place in the Premier League and two points behind leaders Leicester City.
