Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Shrewsbury v Man United

Mark Lawrenson backs Manchester United to ease past Shrewsbury Town on Monday night

Manchester United will be too strong for Shrewsbury Town even if Louis van Gaal fields a weakened team on Monday night, according to Mark Lawrenson.

The Reds Devils suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by Midtjylland on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

Van Gaal’s side have lost their last two games in all competitions following a 2-1 defeat by Premier League strugglers Sunderland last weekend.

However, Lawrenson believes United will have too much for their League One opponents on Monday night despite the Red Devils’s inconsistent form in recent months.

“This tie is all about the romance of the FA Cup and it will be a great night for Shrewsbury and their fans, whatever the result,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“Regardless of the team that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal puts out, they will be too strong for League One opposition.

“The FA Cup has been in the news this week with the talk that replays that could be abolished.

“It is not surprising that Shrews boss Micky Mellon spoke out against that suggestion because, as he said, a replay at a place like Old Trafford is a financial lifeline for clubs like his.”

United are bidding to equal Arsenal’s 12 FA Cup successes this season.

The Red Devils are 10 points behind third-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table ahead of the Gunners’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday 28 February.
