Mark Lawrenson: Why Liverpool shouldn’t sign Alex Teixeira on deadline day
Mark Lawrenson says Shakhtar Donetsk are "taking the mickey" with their £53m price tag on Alex Teixeira
Mark Lawrenson says Liverpool should forget about signing Alex Teixeira on deadline day.
The Brazil international has been heavily linked with a move to sign the Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker before Monday’s transfer deadline.
When you go and deal with these teams, especially in the Ukraine, they take the mickey out of you
Liverpool reportedly offered the Ukrainian side £24.6m for their star player earlier this month but Shakhtar are thought to be holding out for as much as £53m.
Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson, who also represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career, explained why he believes the Reds should avoid signing Teixeira.
“I’d forget about Alex Teixeira,” Lawrenson told Liverpool Echo.
“Like I said last week, when you go and deal with these teams, especially in the Ukraine, they take the mickey out of you. What are they saying now – £53million?
“That’s what you’re up against. I really don’t know why we bother going out to see them.
“This is how these people run their business. ‘You know we told you 30million Euros, well now it’s 60million Euros.’
“Maybe something might happen in the summer, we’ll have to wait and see.”
Teixeira admitted that he would love to move to the 18-time English champions earlier this month and link up with his compatriot Philippe Coutinho.
Liverpool face Leicester City at King Power Stadium in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Teixeira has scored 22 times in 15 games in the Ukrainian top-flight in the current campaign.
The 26-year-old midfielder has also netted three goals in six Champions League games.
