Michael Carrick has admitted his surprise at Anthony Martial’s flying start to life at Manchester United following his summer transfer to the club.

The 20-year-old striker’s rise to prominence has been one of the few positives from a stuttering season for the Red Devils.

Martial joined the Old Trafford outfit from Monaco in the summer transfer window and has scored five goals and made two assists in the Premier League for the Red Devils so far this season.

The forward set up two of United’s goals as the Red Devils booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to a 3-1 win at Derby County on Friday night.

After arriving at Old Trafford as a relatively unknown talent, Carrick admits that he has been impressed by the way he has slotted into life at the club.

Carrick told United’s website: “He has shown his quality from day one since his debut.

“We realise how good he is but we can’t expect everything all the time.

“However, when he’s playing like that [as he did against Derby], he’s pretty much unplayable so it’s nice to have him.”
