Michael Owen reacts to Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Augsburg

Michael Owen praises Liverpool for a decent performance after a goalless draw with Augsburg in the Europa League

Michael Owen backed Liverpool to reach the Europa League last 16 after Thursday night’s goalless draw at Augsburg.

Daniel Sturridge had the best chance to break the deadlock for the Reds in the first leg of the last-32 tie but his effort was snuffed out by the Augsburg defence.

Jurgen Klopp brought on Divock Origi for Sturridge in the second half in search of a winner but Liverpool couldn’t make the breakthrough.

And Ji Dong-won came closest to scoring a late winner but the Augsburg substitute’s effort hit the woodwork and bounced wide.

“It is a decent night’s work for Jurgen Klopp’s men,” Owen told BT Sport.

“You’ve got to fancy them in the second leg at home.

“They wanted an away goal but you don’t get everything. They were more or less in control of the game and worthy of a bit of praise.”

Liverpool face Augsburg in the second leg at Anfield next week ahead of their League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday 28 February.
